Colleges should require students to do community
Introduction:
In WikiPedia, it is said that:\" Community service is donated service or activity
that is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its
institutions.\" However, ever since China had a systematically educational concept,
there have never been a requirement that college students need to do community
service. As a consequence, Chinese students tend to be more indifferent to social
issues. They just focus on books and care about their own business. This situation
stimulates a discussion how colleges reform their education system. Many educators
recommend college students to enter communities and help vulnerable groups, and
many Chinese universities nowadays are considering to make community service as a
necessity to graduation, because it is necessary for college students to learn to service
people ,from which students can become more adjustable to new environment, raise
their moral levels and strengthen their self-understanding. To colleges, community
service is a effective way to reform the traditional standards-based education. To
society, community service is a charitable way to help vulnerable groups and
encourage students to participate in other social fields.
Community service can help college students adjust to new environment, raise
their moral levels and reinforce their self-understanding.
In ancient China, students needed to recite all of Confucianism\' s \"Four books
and Five Classics\",because their tests were all about Confucianism. They were less
adaptable to new environment. From today\' s perspective, they were so conservative

and stubborn. They had little chance to apply those knowledge and they seldom did
something voluntary to their communities. In the modern society, education does
improve a lot and college students do open their mind to the world, but it is still very
difficult for them to adapt themselves to a new environment.
According to a research The Learning Experience Of Chinese Students In
American Universities: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, it says like that:
\"Suzuki (1983) notes that many teachers stereotype Asian and Pacific
American students as quiet, hardworking, and docile, which tends to
reinforce conformity and stifle creativity. Asian and Pacific American
students, therefore, frequently do not develop the ability to assert and express
themselves verbally and are channeled in disproportionate numbers into the
technical/scientific fields. As a consequence, many Asian and Pacific
American students, who undergo dramatic family and school discontinuities,
and suffer from low self-esteem, are overly conforming and have their
academic and social development narrowly circumscribed.\"
When Chinese students study abroad, they will find it very difficult to adjust
themselves to the new environment as the result of the inflexible traditional eduction.
Therefore, receiving relative training like doing community service is an good
opportunity to promote their adaptation. They can also learn to blend themselves in
communities where they meet new things, new people and new jobs. After long time\'
s training, their ability to adapt to new environment must improve a lot.
In addition, if colleges require students to do community service, the morality of
students will become maturer.
\"In other work, Hart and Fegley(1995) found that 15- to 17-year-old
adolescents who engaged in sustained service to their inner-city community
articulated a close connection between their activism and their sense of
