People in their sixties should go to university to retrain because they will be expected to work for longer before retirement, the Government has
suggested.
Older workers who take courses to keep their skills uptodate will be more likely to keep their jobs, claims David Willetts, the higher education
minister. He said the age limit on student loans to cover tuition fees had been lifted, making a degree course “great value” for older people.
His comments followed a government report which found that the country\'s future economic success would depend on the skills and
contributions of older workers.
One in four people will be older than 65 by 2033 and economists have warned that the ageing population will place a heavy burden on
taxpayers unless more people work for longer. The state pension age is to rise to 67 by 2028. Ministers have warned that they have no idea
when younger workers in their thirties will be able to retire.
Mr Willetts, who is accompanying David Cameron in India, urged workers older than 60 to give further education serious consideration. “There
is certainly a pressure for continuing to get retrained and upskilled,” he said.“Higher education has an economic benefit in that if you stay up-todate with knowledge and skills you will be more employable.”
Mr Willetts said a university course had “wider” benefits, making people more likely to lead healthy lives. “Education is such a good thing that
it is not reserved for only younger people,” he said. “ There will be people of all ages who will want to study. There is great value in lifelong
learning.” Under previous rules, students in England would get a loan to cover tuition fees only if they were younger than 54.
Latest figures showed that only 1,940 undergraduates starting courses last year were older than 60, out of a total of 552,240 students in
Britain. Some 6,455 were aged between 50 and 60, according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

BEIJING, March, 17th — The Japanese automaker Toyota will recall some 4,400 units of FJ Cruiser cars in China over seat belt flaws, China\'s
consumer quality watchdog said Saturday.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) said on its website that Toyota China will recall these
imported cars produced between December 2007 and March 2013.
Toyota is busy working on the solution to the flaw and will release improvement methods before April 15, according to the administration.
This marks Toyota\'s second recalling this year after the auto giant announced in January that it would recall 22,869 units of Lexus IS cars in
China due to wiper arm problems.
China\'s private auto ownership reached 93.09 million units by the end of 2012, up 18.3 percent compared with the year before. Along with the
fast expanding auto market, Chinese drivers grow more concerned about the quality of their cars.
Also on Saturday, the GAQSIQ said in a statement on its website that its research has basically confirmed the German automaker
Volkswagen\'s Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission has defects which may cause engine power failures and urged Volkswagen to recall
defective cars after China Central Television (CCTV) exposed Volkswagen\'s gearbox defects on Friday.
To better protect the interests of Chinese consumers, the GAQSIQ announced late last year that it would formulate a guideline to regulate a
recall system for faulty cars.

OTTAWA — After half a century at the bottom of a Belgian swamp (沼泽), Canadian Halifax bomber LW682 will shine again, but this time on
top of the Bomber Command Memorial in London.
Metal from the warplane will be formed into sheets and used to make the memorial\'s roof, a uniquely Canadian contribution to the grand new
memorial — the largest built in London in 200 years, whose roof holds special meaning for Karl Kjarsgaard.
Director of the Bomber Command Museum of Canada, Kjarsgaard has made it his personal duty to recover and repair downed Halifax
bombers wherever they may be.
Shot down over Nazioccupied Belgium in May of 1944, Halifax LW682 crashed into a swamp. All eight men on board — seven Canadians and
one Briton — perished. Five bodies were recovered and buried by German troops while the remaining three were lost to the swamp when the
plane sank.
In 1997, Kjarsgaard led a group called Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada) to Belgium to recover the bomber. After digging down almost eight metres,
they struck pay dirt.
“We found all of the airplane, and the three Canadians still inside,” he said.
While a few parts were in good enough shape to be used in Halifax bomber repair projects, most of the plane was beyond repair.
So what remained was melted, totalling some 680 kilograms, and then shipped home to the Bomber Command Museum, for use in statues
and monuments.
About five years ago, some Britons who were raising money to build the new Bomber Command Memorial turned to Kjarsgaard, asking him
to help raise money in Canada. He finally decided to give them half of the precious metal.
Kjarsgaard said most Canadians don\'t understand the symbolic value of the Halifax, a fourengine heavy bomber widely flown by Canadians
in the Second World War. “We\'ve forgotten that it represents the greatest sacrifice we\'ve ever made,” he said.
Douglas Radcliffe of the U. K.\'s Bomber Command Association said, “The very fact that we have a piece of a bomber, out of the thousands
that were blown out of the sky ... what a credit to Canada.”

Somali pirates (海盗) robbed three Thai fishing ships with 77 sailors on board nearly 1,200 miles off the Somali coast, the
farthest??off??shore attack to date, an officer said Tuesday.
Pirates have gone farther south and east in answer to increased patrols(巡逻) by warships off the Somali shore. The robbing of the
three ships Sunday was about 600 miles outside the normal operation area for the international force, said a spokesman.
The spokesman said the attack so far out at sea was a clear sign that the international patrols against pirates were having a “marked
effect on pirate activity in the area”.
“Once they start attacking that far out, you\'re not even really talking about the Somali basin or areas of water that have any connection
with Somalia.” said an officer, Roger Middleton. “Once you\'re that far out, it\'s just the Indian Ocean, and it means you\'re looking at trade
going from the Gulf to Asia, from Asia to South Africa.”
“This is the farthest robbing to date. They are now operating near the Maldives and India.” said another officer.
The three ships-the MV Prantalay 11,12,and 14-had 77 members on board in total. All of them are Thai, the spokesman said. Before
the Sunday robbing, pirates held 11 ships and 228 sailors.
Pirates have increased attacks over the past year in hopes of catching more dollar payments. Because of increased patrols and
defenses on board ships, the success rate(率) has gone down, though the number of successful attacks has stayed the same year over year.

There are many TV programs about Chinese dishes, but few are like A Bite of China. The seven-part documentary tells us food in
different places in China. The different kinds of food on TV are from 60 places. You can see many kinds of food and they can capture your
eyes and stomach. And you can also learn how to make the food. That’s why the program becomes so popular. However, the program is not
only about food. There are many great stories between food and people. To know good stories, workers of the film spent three months doing
research and nine months filming. Liu Wen, one of the workers, says the stories also show social transformations(社会变迁). “The program
is like a window. It makes the world know more about China. And it helps people around the world not only enjoy Chinese dishes, but also learn
Chinese culture,” he says.

The world is losing the battle against diabetes as the number of people estimated to be living with the
disease soars to a record high of 382 million this year, medical experts said on Thursday. The vast majority have type 2 diabetes - the kind linked to obesity and lack of exercise - and the epidemic is spreading
as more people in the developing world adopt Western, urban lifestyles. The latest estimate from the International Diabetes Federation is equivalent to a global prevalence rate of 8.4 percent of the adult population and compares to 371 million cases in 2012. By 2035, the organization predicts the number of cases will have soared by 55 percent to 592 million.
―The battle to protect people from diabetes and its disabling, life
threatening complications is being lost,‖ the federation said in the sixth edition of its Diabetes Atlas, noting that deaths from the disease were now running at 5.1 million a year or one every six seconds. People with diabetes have inadequate blood sugar control, which can lead to a range of dangerous complications, including damage to the eyes, kidneys and heart. If left untreated, it can result
in premature death.
―Year after year, the figures seem to be getting worse,‖ said David
Whiting, an epidemiologist and public health specialist at the federation. ―All around the world we are seeing increasing numbers of people developing diabetes.‖
He said that a strategy involving all parts of society was needed to improve diets and promote healthier lifestyles. The federation calculates diabetes already accounts for annual healthcare spending of $548 billion and this is likely to rise to $627 billion by 2035.
Worryingly, an estimated 175 million of diabetes cases are as yet undiagnosed, so a huge number of people are progressing towards complications unawares. Most of them live in low- and middle-income countries with far less access to medical care than in the United States and Europe.
The country with the most diabetics overall is China, where the case load is expected to rise to 142.7 million in 2035
from 98.4 million at present. But the highest prevalence rates are to be found in the Western Pacific, where more than a third of adults in Tokelau, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands already are living with the ceutical companies have developed
a range of medicines over the years to counter diabetes, but many patients
still adequately struggle to control their condition, leading to a continuing hunt for improved treatments.

China has conducted the first test-flight of its J-20 stealth fighter, Chinese President Hu Jintao has confirmed to US Defence Secretary Robert Gates.
The confirmation came after images of the 15-minute flight in
Chengdu appeared on several Chinese websites. Mr Hu said that the flight had not been timed to coincide with Mr Gates‘ visit, the
US defence secretary said.
The US is currently the only nation with a fully operational stealth plane. But both Russia and China are known to be working on patterns of stealth fighters, which are invisible to radar. Mr Gates‘ three
-day visit to Beijing comes among US concern over the speed at which China‘s military is modernising and upgrading its technology. ―I asked President Hu about it directly, and he said that the test had absolutely nothing to do with my visit and had been a pre-planned test. And that‘s where we left it,‖ Mr Gates was quoted as saying by Reuters news images of what was said to
be China‘s J-20 fighter first appeared earlier this month during taxi tests at the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute. On Tuesday, the plane took off and flew for about 15 minutes, according to 3 eyewitness accounts published on unofficial Chinese web portals. A video
clip of the flight was also posted on the says it expects the stealth plane to be operational some time between 2017 and 2019.
But earlier this month the Pentagon played down concerns over the fighter. ―Developing a stealth capability with a pattern and then integrating that into a fight environment is going to take some time,‖ said US director of naval intelligence Vice Admiral David ‘s official military budget increased very fast between 1999 and 2009 as the country‘s economy grew. In 2010 it stood at $78bn (?
50bn). But the US has by far the largest defence budget in the world at just over $700bn.

Many books have been written about China through the eyes of Western authors with observations usually framed by
their own cultural background. But Harvard University student John Thornton approaches the country from a different
perspective, unburdened with adult values.
In his first novel, Beautiful Country, the author describes the country and its culture through the eyes of a 14-year-old American boy called Chase. It depicts the protagonist\'s experiences as he witnesses how a talented young Chinese tennis player becomes caught between the country\'s old and new values, between following the rules and bending those that
inhibit his development as a player. Interwoven are Chase\'s feelings and insights about Chinese culture and social
phenomena. \"I think children see the world in a pure and unfiltered way. Their minds are free from preconceived biases and impressions, so they can see things in a very unique way,\" he says. Born in London, Thornton, now 22, came to Beijing when he was 14 to spend a year studying Chinese and training with the Beijing junior tennis team. As an avid writer, he kept journals during his stay that later became resources for
his novel. \"Prior to coming to China, I had a very limited knowledge of the country,\" he says. \"But the year I spent in Beijing really
opened my eyes and I saw what a fascinating and complex and rapidly evolving country China is.\" The Chinese version of Beautiful Country was released in May. Thornton says that what impressed him most about China was young people\'s persistence. Even though the talented Chinese player he depicts becomes a day laborer when the story ends, he says that \"the keynote is still positive, because he is still young and he won\'t give up easily\". That is also why he named the book Beautiful Country, as it is a place with hope and people that never give up, he says.
