As is well known, saying “no” is not easy at all. But sometimes we have to learn to say “no”.
To learn to say “no”, we have to first understand what’s stopping us about it. There are some
common reasons why people find it hard to say “no”.
You want to help others. You are a kind soul (灵魂) at heart. You don’t want to turn the
person away and you want to help when possible, even if it may take up your time.
Afraid of being rude. I was brought up under the idea that saying “no”, especially to people
who are older, is rude. This thinking is common in Asian culture, where face-saving is important.
It means not making others look bad or lose faces.
Wanting to be agreeable. At times, you find you are not in agreement. You don’t want to keep
yourself away from the group, so you agree to do others’ requests.
Fear of conflict (冲突). The person might be angry if you refuse him. This might lead to an
ugly conflict. ①Even if there isn’t, there might be disagreement which might lead to bad effects
(影响) in the future.
Fear of losing opportunities. Sometimes, saying “no” means closing doors or losing
opportunities. It may make you feel worried. For example, one of my friends was asked to work in
another department in her company. Since she liked her team, she didn’t want to go. However, she
didn’t want to say “no” as she felt it would affect her promotion (晋升) opportunities in the future.

________. Some people fear of ________. And some people fear to lose ________.
A new research shows that women try 150 different hairstyles in their lifetime, including
various cuts, colors and shapes. However, men settle(固定)on their favorite hairstyle after trying
only 5 different cuts.
The study of 2,000 women has found that women visit the hairdresser five times a year on
average, and about 100 like to try something different with each trip to the hairdresser. Almost half
are willing to be experimental and change their hairs style.
Women are likely to go for two new styles and at least one color change every year between
the ages of 15 and 65. The study found that 64 percent of women will change their hair simply
because they are bored with their current(目前的)style. Nearly 12 percent will change their hair
in order to look like a celebrity(名人)while 15 percent will change their style for a wedding. 13
percent of women would change their hairstyle after having a baby. Other reasons for trying a new
hairstyle were birthdays.
However, men are not as troublesome as women. They only try five different hairstyles and
then stick to their favorite one in their lifetime. Men usually stick with just one style because of its
being convenient(68 percent)or being liked by their partner(10 percent).
The study of 2,000 men also noticed how celebrity hairstyles have the influence on them and
what kind of haircuts would be more fashionable in their eyes. 400 of them admit they want to
grow their hair longer to copy the likes of David Beckham and actor Brad Pitt, while 240 consider
①dying their hair grey, to keep up with fashion trends. Actually, a hairstyle that stands for

As the saying goes, “①Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles”, traveling is
a very common thing in modern society. Almost everyone can go on a trip at any time as long as
they want to, in fact, centuries ago, some famous people already traveled around China and they
got a lot from exploration (探险).
Xu Xiake, a geographer and writer in Ming dynasty, spent more than thirty years on the road
four hundred years ago. With his mother’s encouragement, Xu Xiake traveled around China. He
met with many difficulties on the road. But he never stopped traveling and writing. Xu Xiake was
on the road all his life, and his travel notes covered as much as his knowledge. His 600,000-word
travel notes finally came out in 1776, about 135 years after his death. China Tourism Day is set on
May 19th, the date when he started The Travels of Xu Xiake.
Marco Polo, a businessman born in 1254 in Italy, is known as a travel king in the west. In
1271, Marco Polo with his father and uncle set foot on the road to China. It took him four years.
Along the way, he met bad weathers, a shortage of food and water and so on.
They reached Shangdu in Inner Mongolia in 1275. Kublai Khan gave them a warm welcome
there and took them to Dadu.

to know and gives you the topics for revision.

topics you need to cover for each subject.
About 12 weeks before your first exam, record the dates and times for each of your exams in
your planner or diary and make a copy: to put on your wall at home.
During your exam, you want your brain to work at its very best, so build in relaxation time
before bed, avoid late night revision sessions and try to go to bed early so you get enough sleep. If
panic (惊慌) starts to creep in, try to replace your ② negative thoughts with more positive (积极的) ones, such as “It’s going to be OK”. If you have difficulty answering a question, leave it and
move on to the next one.
You are not alone while dealing with the stress. Share your worries and get help from others

There are many reasons why I encourage people to travel, and I know that the experience will
make one a better person.
I remember when I was traveling, I began to know the world better. The world is not just
about me, my small town and home. Although you will meet different people from all over the
world, you will realize that people are similar in their dreams, hopes and feelings. Enjoy exploring

those stories are something wrong.
One thing you may find out is that there are problems all over the world. We can’t just get
money to send to these areas and hope that will work them out. The world should get involved (干预) and help wherever these areas are problems. People everywhere should be given a chance. It’s
so easy to ignore (忽视) this if one does not travel or explore. One can look around and see that so
many people have many challenges worse than ours. One can realize that sometimes our biggest
problems are not that big after all.
On your journey you will meet lots of new friends. Talking to strangers and finding about
their lives are great ways to spend your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to
deal with problems and make many decisions along the way. When you travel, you have to be on
your own in some situations. You will surprise yourself by how well you can do that. All your
special experiences could make an interesting book to read. ②It would be filled with your special
memories.
Traveling around is a wonderful experience. If we could all just travel a little more and share
our experiences, we would all be better people and the world would be a better place.
