1、Descend：指缓慢或渐进的移动，多是从斜坡下降。

相比之下，drop和fall则指突然及猛烈地降落。

Fall可以指任何此种移动，不问造成移动的原因；而drop则严格地指从高处放一件东西任由其降落。

2、Sink指在水里或空气里直接向下降落，而不是指沿斜坡下行，这个单词往往表示相当缓慢或逐渐地降落，但也并非必有这个意思。

Sink也可以指能力、意识或体积逐渐的消失或缩小。

4、Decrease , lessen, diminish, reduce, abate, dwindle这组动词的一般含义为减少

（1）Decrease和lessen比较普遍，如果用词不讲究，可以代替这组词中其他任何词，decrease强调数目或使人不快之物的逐渐减少。

例：

The workmen want to decrease the number of working hours and increase pay.

工人要求减少工作时间和增加工资。

（2）Lessen可以表示数量或程度的减少

例：

To lessen hazard

To lessen anxiety

Light lessens as evening comes on.

随着黄昏的到来没光线逐渐变弱。

（3）Diminish表示减少损失

Reduce可以表示尺寸、数量、程度或强度的减少，词义引申之后，可以表示地位、处境、状况的降低。

(4)Abate表示减少时其内涵是使过分或过量的事物得到缓和
