英语重点语法解析despite

Despite the new tunnel, there are still a few people who rashly

attempt to cross the Pass on foot.

During the summer months, the monastery is very busy, for it is

visited by thousands of people who cross the Pass in cars. As

there are so many people about, the dogs have to be kept in a

special enclosure.

尽管修通了隧道，但仍有一些人想冒险徒步跨越圣伯纳德山口。

夏天的几个月里，修道院十分忙碌，因为有成千上万的人驾车通过山口，顺道来修道院参观。由于来人太多，狗被关在专门的围栏里。

（1）despite引导让步状语从句

Despite the new tunnel, there are still a few people who rashly

attempt to cross the Pass on foot.

despite表示尽管、不顾。除了使用despite来引导让步状语从句外，还可以使用(in) despite of 或者 in spite of。

despite: 指不受某事或某种原因的阻碍，语气轻于in spite of。

in spite of: 在这些词中语气最强，可与despite换用，口语或书面语中均可使用。

notwithstanding: 语气最弱，仅表示一种障碍的存在。

He would go in spite of our warnings. 他不听我们的劝告, 执意要去。

（2）during表示“在……期间”

During the summer months …

在表示在某时间区间时，可以使用for，in等，跟during是不一样的。

①during和for的区别

during: 侧重指习惯性的某一段时间，而for指特定的某一段时间；

during指继续的时间概念，突出事件发生的时刻，而for侧重事件持续时间的总长度。

②during和in的区别

during和in在多数情况下是可以混用，但在表示特定的，确切的某一个时间里发生的动作时，通常用in。

They usually go on holiday in May. 他们通常5月去度假。

（3）as引导的原因状语从句

As there are so many people about, the dogs have to be kept in a

special enclosure.

昨天刚学习了now that，今天学习as，都能引出原因状语从句。

For hundreds of years, St. Bernard dogs have saved the lives of

travellers crossing the dangerous Pass. These friendly dogs,

which were first brought from Asia, were used as watchdogs

even in Roman times. Now that a tunnel has been built through

the mountains, the Pass is less dangerous, but each year, the

dogs are still sent out into the snow whenever a traveller is in

difficulty.

几百年来，圣伯纳德修道院驯养狗拯救了许多翻越这道山口的旅游者的生命。那些最先从亚洲引进的狗，待人友好，早在罗马时代就给人当看门狗了。如今由于山里开挖了隧道，翻越山口已不那么危险了。但每年还要派狗到雪山地里去帮助那些遇到困难的旅游者。

（1）save的用法

①save表示拯救的含义

save有拯救的含义，比如

save lives 拯救生命 save one\'s life 挽救某人生命。

life的复数是lives，这个单词刚好又是live的第三人称单数形式，所以在文章中看到的时候，记得根据语境词性做出判别。

除此之外，save可以用来表示保存的意思，比如我们在使用word的时候，要养成ctrl+s快捷键的习惯，免得意外造成写的内容丢失。这个s就是save的首字母，表示保存。

②save表示“保存”时，与store，preserve等的单词区别

save因为有拯救的含义，所以在做保存时，有珍惜并且节省的含义，争取从数量上有所增加。

store表示存放，以备将来使用

preserve强调完好无损的保存，比如We must preserve our natural

resources. 我们必须保护自然资源。

retain指继续保持。这个单词与remain比较像，remain表示剩余物，作动词是留下，剩下的意思。

（2）now that的用法

Now that a tunnel has been built through the mountains …

在这个句子中，now that是一个词组，不要看成是now, that …,意思完全不一样。

now that表示既然、由于，是一个关系连词，用来引出原因状语从句。

这里就又给大家一个新的表达方式，别只会用because啊，since啊什么的了。但需要注意的一点是，now that因为有now的存在，多用来强制现在出现了新状况。

Now that oil is scarce, the fate of the motor car is uncertain. 既然石油短缺,那么汽车将来会怎样就难以预料了。
