WHITE BALANCE ENHANCEMENT

This digital microscope incorporates an improvement that is not covered in the enclosed instruction

brochure or Motic Images 2000 software documentation.

The incandescent illumination provided in your microscope can cause the light to have a yellow cast.

While the image being viewed may appear satisfactory, the yellow cast from the illumination will

somewhat distort the true colors of the specimen. A “White Balance” button is located on the top surface

of the head of the microscope. It is not essential to utilize the “White Balance” in order to use your digital

microscope, but using this feature will enhance the color clarity and the quality of the images obtained.

Follow the procedure below to calibrate your digital microscope for this white balance enhancement.

(1) After you have followed the instructions for loading the software and connecting the digital

microscope to your computer, put the calibration slide onto the stage. Follow instructions in the

software documentation to calibrate the measurement function of your digital microscope.

(2) Now, while you still have the calibration slide on the stage, move the slide until the “dot” is outside

the field of view, but the blank glass portion of the slide still remains within the field of view.

(3) Press on the “white balance” button for 2 seconds. This completes the white balance correction

procedure. Basically, this tricks the camera into turning the “yellow” light being picked up by the

camera into a white light. You will observe on the computer monitor that the image has become

“whitened.”

(4) Note: You may need to repeat the white balance correction procedure if you do one of the

following:

(a) If you adjust the rheostat light intensity control, and then find the color of the image to be

distorted to an extent not acceptable to you, or

(b) You change the specimen to one that has a significantly different depth of color or color

contrasts.

It is not essential to utilize the “White Balance” in order to use your digital microscope, but using this

feature will enhance the color clarity and the quality of the images obtained.

IF AFTER COMPLETE INSTALLATION OF YOUR MOTIC IMAGES 2000 SOFTWARE AND

CONNECTION OF MICROSCOPE TO COMPUTER, YOU ARE UNABLE TO OBTAIN AN IMAGE OF

THE SPECIMEN BEING VIEWED (image window is completely black)……

Please follow each of the following trouble shooting procedures until you are able to see an image of the

specimen appear in the Live Image window after clicking mouse on the camcorder icon. If any of the

following options permits you to obtain a specimen image in the image window, it should not be

necessary to proceed further with the remaining options. Please be aware that the USB drivers for this

Camera can be found on the Motic Images 2000 CD: D:DriverAD640

1. First click on the Camcorder Icon on the top of the Motic Images 2000 screen. This will open the

Motic DS Capture Window. At the top of this window you will see “device” on the top right hand side.

Select “device” and a drop down menu will fall. Make sure the “AD640” has a check next to it. If it is

not, reselect. If the “AD640” is not listed, then the driver for this microscope must be installed.

2. If your computer has other USB devices already installed, it is possible that it will not recognize the

proper USB device for capturing your microscope images. A “Code 10” error will display. Please

disconnect any other USB device from the computer until the Digital device is installed.

3. Make certain that the green LED indicator light and red camera power switch button is illuminated.

Depress camera power switch button to turn camera on.

This point “2” pertains to DC3-163 and DC3-420TH models only. Make certain that the sliding

rod on the microscope head is fully extended out. If the rod is left in the “in” position, the image is not

being allowed to reach the camera.

Model DC3-420TH stereo microscope has a two-position rod: fully pushed in, image directed

through the eyepieces; fully pulled out, image directed to the camera.

Model DC3-163 has a three-position rod: fully pushed in, image directed through the eyepieces;

pulled out mid way, image directed to the camera; pulled out all the way, image directed 70% to

camera and 30% to eyepieces.
