This procedure applies to all materials and components used in JLR vehicles, systems or

subsystems.

C OBJECT

2

This procedure defines an accelerated test applicable to materials, components and sub-

assemblies that are exposed to conditions of high humidity. It is based on BS 3900 part F2.

This test method is used to evaluate material/component performance after humidity exposure and

is intended to assess the long term effect on both appearance and performance of the

materials/components under test.

D

RISK ASSESSMENT

A valid risk assessment must be in place before this test is conducted.

E

REVIEW

This document must be reviewed at least every three years from the date of the last review or

update.

The humidity chamber shall be a suitable closed cabinet that is capable of maintaining the

specified conditions for temperature and humidity. A fan is used for circulating the air within the

chamber, so that the temperature at any two points does not differ by more than 1 °C.

To ensure condensation humidity a dedicated humidity chamber must be used. This consists of a

closed chamber with a reservoir for distilled or de-ionised water, covering or situated in the bottom

of the chamber. A heater element must be immersed in the water reservoir as this is the sole

means of heating the chamber.

The cabinet interior and sample support racks will be constructed of materials that are inert and

resistant to the environment within the cabinet; e.g. stainless steel, nylon, polyethylene.

Multi-function programmable chambers may be used, provided that the necessary controls over

temperature and humidity are maintained and condensation humidity is achieved.

H SAMPLE POSITIONING

Samples must be at least 30 mm from each other and 35 mm from a chamber wall, positioned to

ensure the most effective drainage of the copious condensation that occurs. Components/materials

must be tested \'in vehicle attitude\' wherever possible.

I TEST CONDITIONS

1

Information regarding specific sample preparation prior to test, duration of testing and performance

requirements shall be as defined in the standard for the specific material or product under test.

2 Temperature

The temperature of the air space in the chamber will be 48 °C ± 2 °C.. A recording thermometer is

desirable.

3 Humidity:

This will be 95 % ± 5%.maintained by evaporation of distilled or de-ionised water from the heated

reservoir.

J PROCEDURE

1

Prepare the sample for test in accordance with the requirements of the appropriate material or

product Standard.

Expose the samples in the chamber for the specified time period, checking the operation of the

chamber and inspect the samples as necessary at suitable intermediate intervals. Opening of the

chamber will be restricted to the minimum time and frequency necessary to carry out the above

operations.

Remove the samples and examine in accordance with the acceptance criteria defined in the

standard for the material or product, (usual checks are for colour change, blistering, loss of

adhesion and corrosion. If painted, blot quickly with absorbent paper and examine within 15

minutes of removal for any corrosion, blistering adhesion or other deleterious colour

change. Allow to stand for 24 hours at room temperature and re-examine the film for the specified

parameters.
